Post Stroke Rehab
POST STROKE REHAB
A stroke is a medical emergency, and prompt treatment is crucial. Early action can reduce brain damage and other complications. Globally, stroke is the second leading cause of death after ischemic heart diseases.
Following a stroke, patients may suffer a range of impaired functions which can be partial or complete loss of function of the affected muscle or sensation. This may lead to impairment to their mobility which predisposes them to sores, deep vein thrombosis, muscle dystrophy all of which are associated with increased poststroke mortality in both genders and specifically in patients aged 60 years or older.
Care?
For stroke survivors a good and comprehensive rehabilitation program is the key to recovery and to enable them to reach their highest level of independence as possible and have a good quality of life. A multimodal approach is used depending on the type of stroke, chronicity of the problem and also the age of patient.
Physiotherapy plays a pivotal role in Stroke Rehabilitation by improving the Neural Plasticity, which is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. Rehabilitation can be Task specific which helps in functional recovery or Symptom specific which improves the motor and sensory abilities. In certain cases, speech therapy & swallow therapy may be required to achieve optimal recovery & restoration of ADL wholly or partially.
