Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder which affects the movements of the body. It is the most common neuro degenerative disorder in the older persons which leads to significant functional loss and loss of independence. Patients with Parkinson’s disease, have slowness of movements, tremors, increased tone of muscles – rigidity and also have loss of postural reflexes. It is mainly because of loss of substantia nigra, part of the brain which secretes dopamine.

Parkinson’s disease can present as Depression, anxiety, infrequent eye blinking, staring looks, short & small steps, stooping gait, pill rolling or resting tremors, Rigidity of the muscles, autonomic symptoms like urinary urgency, dysphagia etc.

Care?

Physiotherapy plays very important role in management of parkinsonism.  Rigidity, Tremors and short shuffling Gait– affects the patient in every day-to-day activities which can be moving around, a simple sit to stand, or even to take a cup of tea.

If these symptoms are under control, individual becomes independent, improves the quality of life & emotional well-being. This can be achieved by starting rehabilitation in the early stages.

A customized regimen of exercises which is weight training, facilitation exercises, wobble boards for balance, peg board activities, fine motor activities like buttoning & unbuttoning, drawing shapes etc. They all help in reducing the rigidity, improving the flexibility & balance.
